We spoke to Rosemary, Hire Manager at The Kit Room, about her new piece of kit…

SO WHAT IS THE DJI OSMO?

DJI are known for their drones and gimbals (camera support), and while they are relative new-comers to broadcast equipment, they have made an big impact. The Kit Room already have the DJI Ronin, and are sending one off to Finland on Wednesday for a month of being thrown around on the back of a snowmobile!

DJI released a hand held gimbal camera at the end of last year, and at the time I wasn’t excited about it at all. It was just a souped up GoPro but with 3-way axes, but now… we're listening. Here's the five reasons we're excited about it:

1. It's SO easy to use.

The Osmo is beautifully ergonomic, footage is effortlessly smooth, and it is easy to jump between different shooting modes - therefore, creating a stunning, smooth shot with ease.

2. It has remote access

Your phone is the monitor and the remote, so you can either hand hold the camera OR set it up somewhere and remotely access it. Amazing!

3. It's affordable

Not only is the camera affordable, but so is the media, being Micro SD!

4. Accessories

It has plenty of great accessories.  You can put it almost anywhere (BAR UNDERWATER!), just like the GoPro! The accessories include macro tripod, bar mount and suction mount.

5. Recording formats

It not only shoots 4k, but 120fps slow mo, D-log, 60mbps.

See for yourself - here's a video of the DJI vs an action camera:

Now, there are the negatives… The sound quality isn't great, partly because of the fan you can hear. Also, it has a minimum focus of 5ft, 1.5 metre, so it would be great to get a little closer.

Kit Room verdict: We want one!

We would sell this camera as a b-camera only, so the problems above don’t feel like too much of an issue.

For A camera gimbal action we recommend you should still use the DJI Ronin.

NOW recently at NAB in Las Vegas DJI have announced a 4 axes version called the DJI Osmo RAW. They haven’t said when it is coming out yet but that's next on our list!
