How to get experience in broadcasting when background is in branded content

I have come from a live theatre background and over the last year have been working at 2 big agencies/production houses as an Assistant Producer on branded content. I have been on several shoots and gained experience in all areas of production and editorial. Despite much of this content being format based (currently a dating show series), I've found it hard to be considered for non-branded shows for broadcast. Does anyone have any tips?
